Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, usually in August or September. This festival holds deep religious and spiritual significance for millions of Hindus worldwide.
The essence of Janmashtami lies in commemorating the divine descent of Lord Krishna, who came to earth to restore dharma (righteousness) and vanquish evil. According to mythology, Krishna's birth was destined to bring an end to the tyrannical rule of the demon king Kansa. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, truth over falsehood, and peace over violence.
Devotees observe Janmashtami with fasting, night vigils, prayers, and singing devotional songs. At midnight, believed to be Krishna's exact birth time, statues of baby Krishna are ceremonially bathed, dressed in new clothes, and worshipped. The celebrations often include vibrant reenactments of Krishna’s childhood antics and leelas (divine plays), especially his playful acts in Gokul and Vrindavan, bringing communities together in devotional spirit.
Spiritually, Janmashtami is a time to reflect on Krishna's teachings, notably those in the Bhagavad Gita, which emphasize devotion, righteousness, and the pursuit of spiritual wisdom. The festival encourages devotees to cultivate virtues like love, compassion, and selflessness, and to seek divine grace for inner transformation.
In summary, Janmashtami is not just a day to honor Lord Krishna’s birth but also a celebration of divine love, moral values, and spiritual awakening that continues to inspire millions to lead lives grounded in dharma and devotion.
This year the Janmashtami is being celebrated on 16th August with great fanfare at the Shri Shri Radha Madan Mohan Ji Temple at ISKCON Kharghar. There will also be live streaming of the festivities on the official website ( https://www.iskcon-navimumbai.org ) and on Social Media Pages.
